Infrared Quantum Dots Provide Stunning Images

Infrared Quantum Dots Provide Stunning Images Infrared Quantum Dots Provide Stunning Images Infrared Quantum Dots Provide Stunning Images Most specialists use close to infrared light (frequencies somewhere in the range of 700 and 900 nanometers) for in vivo imaging inside the body. Shortwave infrared light (SWIR) (1,000 to 2,000 nanometers) can possibly give far better outcomes, since body tissues are progressively straightforward at that frequency. SWIR focal points over the noticeable and close infrared districts incorporate less autofluorescence, low light retention by blood and tissue, and diminished dissipating. The absence of splendid, stable, and top notch SWIR producers/markers has forestalled the general selection of SWIR imaging by biomedical analysts. Presently, in any case, a group of specialists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has found an approach to make nanoscale particles that can be infused into the body, where they radiate SWIR in focused territories. These quantum dabs give analysts amazingly point by point pictures of inside body structures and procedures. We exploited an extraordinary property of short-wave infrared light, which is basically the capacity to give an unmistakable, brilliant sign produced from the focused on structure that isn't blocked or dissipated by the encompassing tissues, says research researcher Oliver Bruns, an individual from the MIT research group. This permits us to see natural procedures in living, moving creatures with incredible clearness and detail. SWIR quantum spot tests. Picture: MIT A Key Semiconductor Material Bruns and his group built up a class of top notch SWIR-emissive indium-arsenide-based quantum dabs, which can be changed for different imaging applications. They show restricted and size-tunable discharge and a drastically higher outflow quantum yield contrasted with other SWIR tests. These quantum-spot nanocrystals discharge light at a particular recurrence that can be unequivocally tuned by controlling the specific size and creation of the particles. The MIT group infused the quantum specks into mice to decide the metabolic turnover paces of lipoproteins in a few organs, at the same time and continuously. They additionally estimated heartbeat and breathing rates in alert and excessive creatures, bringing about an itemized 3D quantitative stream guide of the mouse mind vasculature. The quantum dabs transmitted short-wave infrared frequencies that were sufficiently brilliant to be effectively recognized through the encompassing skin and muscle tissues. Actually, the dabs were so brilliant their outflows were caught with short presentation times. Key to this achievement was a recently evolved camera that is exceptionally touchy to short wave infrared light, making it conceivable to create single pictures as well as recordings that catch subtleties of movement, for example, the progression of blood, making it conceivable to recognize veins and conduits. Bruns was dazzled by the blend of profound entrance, high spatial goal, multicolor imaging, and quick securing speed. We could follow the stream in every single slim, at super-fast, he says. This permitted the quantitative proportion of stream at high goal, over enormous regions. Further, Bruns takes note of, this was cultivated while the mice were wakeful and moving, instead of past techniques that necessary them to be anesthetized. Future Potential This new imaging framework could turn into a standard methodology later on for making point by point pictures of inner body structures, for example, the fine systems of veins. We are as yet shocked by the nature of the pictures we can take utilizing short wave infrared producers, says Bruns. It is astounding to get such an unmistakable gander at dynamic organic procedures. Introductory applications for this framework would be preclinical exploration in creatures, since the mixes contain a few materials that are probably not going to be endorsed for human use; meanwhile, Bruns and his group are creating renditions of the quantum dabs that will be more secure for people. When endorsed, future applications could incorporate utilizing quantum spots to concentrate how blood stream designs in a tumor change as the tumor grows, perhaps giving bits of knowledge into better approaches to screen illness movement and decide the adequacy of medication medicines. Our vision is that 5 to a long time from now, SWIR imaging frameworks will be a standard for preclinical and clinical optical imaging, says Bruns. Ideally every examination place and each significant center will have one. Imprint Crawford is an autonomous author. For Further Discussion We are as yet shocked by the nature of the pictures we can take utilizing short wave infrared producers. It is astonishing to get such an unmistakable gander at dynamic natural procedures. Prof. Oliver Bruns, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

How to Write a Great Resume for Career Change

Step by step instructions to Write a Great Resume for Career Change Step by step instructions to Write a Great Resume for Career Change Composing a resume for profession change can be an overwhelming possibility. How would you present your past and current involvement with such a way, that it bids to recruiting administrators in a very surprising field? Would-be vocation changers regularly get debilitated and surrender now, while others make pointless applications utilizing their old resume and never hear back. Fortunately there are numerous approaches to handle this issue. As a resume essayist, I work with profession changers all the time here are a couple of my preferred resume insider facts. Try not to utilize a practical organization! As you research continue composing for vocation change, you'll no uncertainty run over different articles suggesting that you utilize a useful resume This is the term given to a resume that doesn't follow the conventional sequential experience recipe. Rather, experience is introduced as far as abilities, with just a superficial reference to profession order (typically positioned toward the finish of the resume). The hypothesis is that this resume structure will show your transferable aptitudes without the interruption of seeing that your activity titles are in another field. The issue is that each selection representative and employing chief on the planet realizes what a practical resume is and why it is utilized. In this way, the stunt won't work. Truth be told, talking as somebody who has settled on several employing choices, I can reveal to you that an utilitarian resume for the most part harms you. That is on the grounds that the spotters realize you're utilizing it to conceal something. So please â€" disregard the guidance to utilize this sort of resume continue (exhortation which is just at any point given by individuals who haven't employed anybody) since it will cost you openings. Comprehend the business' needs and concerns and show how you can address them. So on the off chance that you can't utilize stunts, what would you be able to do? Each business has explicit requirements as a top priority when they search for another worker. To some degree they'll for the most part need understanding and, in case you're evolving professions, you might not have this. Be that as it may, they'll additionally have explicit prerequisites about character, morals, work style, level of responsibility, and delicate abilities, for example, correspondence or teambuilding. To comprehend what these may be, study your objective calling to comprehend that drivers of accomplishment. Furthermore, when you're applying to a particular organization, become more acquainted with that organization all around, so you recognize what character qualities and delicate abilities matter most. This will assist you with composing a resume that interests to employing supervisors and HR people at that organization, in any event, when your experience is not exactly perfect. Present independent and unpaid work as though it were a full-time position. On the off chance that you need to be a website specialist yet the main structure work you've done has been for loved ones, it despite everything considers understanding. It doesn't make a difference whether they paid you or not. The fact of the matter is you accomplished the work and you have to show that on your resume similarly as though you had been redressed. (Furthermore, on the off chance that you don't have any unpaid involvement with your picked field, presently's an ideal opportunity to get a few!) Impart your enthusiasm and devotion Your resume needs to show businesses why they should take a risk on you. Again and again, individuals need to change professions without having thoroughly considered it completely. Managers will stress you may be doing likewise. Underlining any experience will help, yet in addition it's critical to ensure that your resume unmistakably conveys your enthusiasm for, and promise to, this vocation change. Young v. United Parcel Service What the Pregnancy Discrimination Case is Really About

Youthful v. Joined Parcel Service What the Pregnancy Discrimination Case is Really About Any lady in the region of her youngster bearing years will need to focus on a case that is being heard by the Supreme Court today. The high court's discoveries on Young v. Joined Parcel Service should address the hazy situations of what working environment insurances are ensured for pregnant ladies. The least you have to know: What's the situation about, at any rate? The offended party for the situation is Peggy Young of Lorton, Va., who had filled in as a conveyance truck driver for UPS. As an aspect of her responsibilities depiction, she should have been ready to lift bundles weighing as much as 70 pounds. Be that as it may, when she got pregnant, her maternity specialist thought of her a note that said she ought not lift in excess of 20 pounds. Youthful requested an impermanent light-obligation task, yet the organization's word related wellbeing chief established that she was ineligible. Youthful says the division director at that point revealed to her she was an over the top risk, and she was not permitted to come back to work until after she had conceived an offspring. So Young needed to take an all-encompassing unpaid time away, which made her lose her wellbeing inclusion. Wasn't that segregation? That is the issue the court needs to reply. In 1978, Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act which explains that victimization pregnant ladies is a type of sex separation. That implies your manager can't fire you or deny you work benefits since you're pregnant, you may get pregnant, you've conceived an offspring, or you have any related clinical issues. Your boss needs to treat you equivalent to individuals who are not pregnant but rather comparable in their capacity to work. To demonstrate sex segregation, in any case, Young expected to show four things. To start with, that she was a lady. Second, that she was equipped for the activity, or the activity advantage. Third, her manager denied her the activity or advantage she needed. Also, fourth, a correspondingly arranged man got the activity or advantage that she needed. The fourth presents a specific test: Since men can't get pregnant, which men are in a comparable circumstance? Youthful says UPS gave some different specialistsâ€"workers who were harmed at work or had their drivers' licenses were incidentally disavowedâ€"the light obligation she needed. Subsequently, Young says UPS owed her similar housing. In any case, lower courts couldn't help contradicting Young. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals contemplated that UPS's strategy was pregnancy-dazzle. UPS wouldn't have offered light obligation assignments to, state, a man who tossed his pull out by lifting his child or a lady who harmed herself during a volunteer fireman move. Since UPS didn't give all its briefly debilitated specialists light obligation, the court found that UPS didn't need to give light obligation to Young. Numerous ladies' gatherings, wellbeing suppliers, work advocates and even master life activists emphatically couldn't help contradicting that administering. On the off chance that sooner or later during her pregnancy, a pregnant laborer needs a minor acclimation to her activity obligations so as to keep carrying out her responsibility securely, the business has a commitment to give that, says Liz Watson, chief of Workplace Justice for Women at the National Women's Law Center. What occurs straightaway? Youthful claimed. The Supreme Court will hear oral contentions for the situation Wednesday and issue a decision at some point before the finish of this term, in late June. So you can't be terminated or denied benefits. Additionally, contingent on the size of the organization, you might be qualified by law for as long as 12 weeks of unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. Moreover, under Obamacare, managers are required to permit moms sensible break time and a private space to communicate bosom milk, Watson says. I think a business damaged my privileges. What would i be able to do? You can contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to record an objection, Watson says. You'll have more organization than you may expect: From 1997 to 2011, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission got more than 74,000 grumblings of pregnancy segregation. You can likewise contact your state's reasonable work practice organization. A few states and regions have much more grounded securities for pregnant ladies in the work environment. In the previous year and a half, Illinois, Delaware, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, West Virginia, Philadelphia, New York City, Providence and Pittsburg have all passed new laws, Watson says. Or on the other hand call a legal advisor. We sadly address ladies a ton who have endured pregnancy segregation, Watson says. What happened to Peggy Young, being constrained off the activity since she got a specialist's note, is going on to ladies all over the nation.

20 Rule

20 Rule Pareto's Principle or the 80/20 Rule In 1906, Italian financial expert Vilfredo Pareto made a numerical recipe to depict the inconsistent dispersion of riches in his nation. Pareto saw that 20 percent of the individuals possessed 80 percent of the countries riches. He was unable to know it, however in time that standard would be found to apply with uncanny exactness to numerous circumstances and be helpful in numerous orders, including the investigation of business profitability. Growing the Definition In the late 1940s, Dr. Joseph M. Juran, an item quality master of that period, credited the 80/20 standard to Pareto and called it Paretos rule. Paretos standard, or Paretos law, might not have become a family unit term, yet the 80/20 principle is unquestionably refered to right up 'til the present time to portray monetary disparity. It likewise is a valuable apparatus to assist you with organizing and deal with the work in your life. On Quality Juran took Paretos guideline further, applying the 80/20 standard to quality investigations. For instance, he conjectured that 20 percent of the imperfections cause 80 percent of the issues in many items. Today, venture administrators realize that 20 percent of the work expends 80 percent of time and resources. That 20 percent is comprised of the initial 10 percent and the last 10 percent of the task. Different models you may have experienced: 80 percent of a companys revenues are created by 20 percent of its customers80 percent of grievances originate from 20 percent of customers 80 percent of value issues sway 20 percent of a companys items As a contrary guideline: 20 percent of financial specialists give 80 percent of funding20 percent of representatives utilize 80 percent of all wiped out days20 percent of an online journals posts create 80 percent of its traffic There are an almost boundless number of models that we will in general apply the 80/20 guideline to in our own and working lives. More often than not, we are referencing Paretos Rule without applying thorough numerical examination to the circumstance. We make speculations regarding this 80/20 measurement, yet even with the messy math, the proportion is uncannily exact in our reality. Utilizing the 80/20 Rule to Help Productivity There are at any rate seven different ways that the 80/20 guideline can be utilized to upgrade your own efficiency or that of your business. On the off chance that you take a gander at the things on your schedule, odds are just a couple are attached to significant issues. While it might be fulfilling to check off an enormous number of the littler issues, the 80/20 principle proposes you center around the couple of progressively significant things that will create the most critical outcomes. The rundown probably won't develop a lot shorter, however you will rehearse successful prioritization. In evaluating dangers for an up and coming venture, youll find that few out of every odd hazard conveys equivalent importance. Select the dangers that represent the most noteworthy potential for harm and center your checking and hazard arranging exercises on them. Try not to disregard the others, simply disperse your endeavors proportionately. Concentrate on the 20 percent of your clients that make up the main part of your incomes and put your time in comprehension, distinguishing, and qualifying comparable customers. Regularly assess the ?80 percent of your clients that create 20 percent of your business and recognize chances to shed them for clients that drive better outcomes. A few chiefs and firms effectively separate their client postings like clockwork, viably terminating the base performing customers. Look for the 80/20 principle in your client assistance. In the event that 20 percent of your items are making 80 percent of your objections, do some underlying driver investigation to recognize the quality issues there. Concentrate on any documentation issues, and make restorative move varying. Business people and free experts can utilize the 80/20 principle to assess their outstanding burdens. They may locate that a lopsided measure of their time is spent on inconsequential exercises, for example, authoritative work that can be effectively and modestly outsourced. When assessing your mid-year progress on your objectives, center around the not many that are generally basic to your turn of events or achievement. As in that assignment list, not all obligations and objectives are made similarly. Handy Limits to the 80/20 Rule: The 80/20 guideline has numerous applications in our work and individual lives, yet there are minefields here, as well. On the off chance that youre an administrator, dont center around the 20 percent of top entertainers in your group to the detriment of the other 80 percent. You are answerable for expanding the quantity of top entertainers, not simply surveying and possibly killing those who are poor performers. As a speculator, you may think the 80/20 standard proposes diminishing your venture enhancement. ?You may make acclimations to your portfolio if just 20 percent of your ventures are driving 80 percent of the outcomes yet give cautious consideration to your general portfolio blend. Pareto's rule is a helpful develop while investigating endeavors and results. It is important when applied to arrangements of undertakings or objectives. It can give a helpful structure to tending to numerous issues. Use it generously, however remember that 20 percent of anything isn't an immaterial sum.

I think it is worth re-telling, as it accommodates our topic of loathsomeness pursuit of employment stories, with an amusing turn! Now and then, even the best laid plans dont go as arranged For example, another customer of mine whose pursuit of employment is going full bore. He has begun being welcomed for a great deal of meetings, which is extremely energizing (for him and for me!) Having worked in one spot for his whole (protracted) profession, the meeting is an emphasize point, and we have talked about and arranged to confront this significant scaffold between the open door for a vocation and really finding a new line of work! He recognizes what to do to get ready. Some of the time it just doesnt go as arranged. For instance, an ongoing meeting: The shirt he was intending to wear didnt fit. Fortunately, he had an additional one helpful. His very much idea out portfolio was looking out for the kitchen table. Lamentably, he overlooked it there and possibly acknowledged it when he arrived at his meeting goal. His GPS didnt have the companys address in its framework, so finding the meeting spot was somewhat dubious. Plunking down for the meeting, his telephone rang. Overlooking the cardinal guideline about not noting your telephone during a meeting, he addressed it. Who was calling? An exceptionally prominent enrolling firm requesting that he plan a meeting! There are a few exercises to be gained from this story, yet the most significant exercise is the one I havent imparted to you this customers response to the entire chaos: I was not irate with myselfHave a snicker with me not at me, everything I can see is the amusing side of what happened today. What Kelso Knows about Work

What Kelso Knows about Work What Kelso Knows about Work A large portion of what he said was advised to a significant number of us by astute guardians, guides and companions its important that teenagers, as a gathering, tend not to tune in to this sort of advicethat is except if its originating from Mila Kunis BF. So whatd he need to state? Peruse on: 1) Opportunity looks a part like difficult work. While the facts demonstrate that he didnt concoct this bit of shrewdness, it sure sounded much additionally persuading coming out of his wry smile than it does getting out and about on Facebook in e-card position. Be that as it may, underneath the buzzword, this is as obvious as its at any point been. With innovation getting increasingly open and more straightforward to utilize, it very well may be anything but difficult to believe that extremely difficult work has no spot in this world. Nothing could be farther from reality. Nose to the grindstone, one foot before the other, and head down can have significantly more effect in a workforce that is progressively social, disorderly and computerized. 2) Never quit your first job until you have your next activity. Ashton (Chris) Kutcher sketched out the employments hed been working since he was 13 and clarified how he could never leave an occupation until he had another occupation. Hes a definitive uninvolved applicant! Truly however, in todays economy, this is counsel that bodes well for pretty much everybody except particularly passage level occupation searchers, who can be truly naive about their fairly estimated value in a temperamental economy. 3) I never had an occupation that I was unreasonably useful for. This one didnt go very as viral as the others yet it was MY top pick. As you ascend the vocation stepping stool its simple to overlook the occupations that got you there-the managers who appeared to be terrible at that point however shown you so much; the obligatory errands that appeared to be depleting yet gave your day structure; the alarming check to-check presence that indicated you the estimation of cash these all have significance. With outsourcing and unforeseen work turning out to be progressively basic nowadays, the vast majority of us will have to return to our underlying foundations, doing humble undertakings at new companies, working late into the night on a side venture. Main concern? On the off chance that Ashton Kutcher can clear up Cheerio dust, you can without a doubt finish that spreadsheet. 4) The world is comprised of individuals no more brilliant than you. The really rousing piece of Kutchers discourse was something that nobody at any point let me know; I needed to learn it for myself. Its simple to take a gander at illuminating presences and feel that they know more than you do. There are a lot of individuals in the business world who will say That wont work, we previously attempted it. However, while its essential to gain from the encounters of others, its additionally significant to understand that your thoughts and ideas are as important as anybody elses. 5) Dont carry on with an actual existence, fabricate a real existence. Making your own fate seems like something a youthful, excellent individual would state, yet that doesnt mean its false. Rather than checking all through an occupation that doesnt fulfill with individuals that dont value your commitments, increasingly more employment searchers are searching for elective methods of working. Building a life is a long ways from simply living. When youre working 40-80 hour work weeks, it can get simple to overlook that. Watch the entire discourse here.

The worst thing is not to even use the first few sentences.First, an Employer would not hire someone who does not use the Drat. They will see the next several pages of the resume and think your information needs to be expanded upon. You need to use this format for each job you apply for in order to get a good sense of how to present your information in the most efficient way possible. As mentioned before, the format should be chosen in order to present th e Drat the best. The process should be done with a business focused mindset. This means using both your strengths and weaknesses as well as the specific skills that the employer is looking for. Also, be sure that your Drat is strong, as that is what the employer is looking for when they choose to read your application.By using this format, your Drat will stand out from the rest of the crowd and a potential employer will choose to read your resume rather than someone else's. Employers want to find someone who has succeeded at every level of their life and not someone who has merely had a job or someone who has been hired and failed. The information that is included on your Drat will show what you have accomplished in the past. The information is presented in a logical manner and shows that you can be trusted with a position of authority. All of this information should be kept concise and organized. One of the best ways to improve the appearance of your Drat is to be sure that you have a professional cover letter included on the cover page. Be sure to include all of the information that the employer needs to see about you and then put it in the style that is expected by the employer. A professional writing style will help you to produce a polished and professional letter that will leave a positive impression on the employer. Finally, there are some techniques that can be used to help you further develop your Drat. For example, you may want to attend a national convention to network with other employers. Be sure to take advantage of the many networking opportunities that are available to you and your future employer.

Five Fun and Interesting Ways to Learn New Work Skills Online

Five Fun and Interesting Ways to Learn New Work Skills Online With technology and society evolving as rapidly as it is today, the need for new job skills is now larger than ever. From robotics to office management, there is no industry where the impacts of a changing world cant be felt. For so many in the situation of seeking employment in this market, having as many valuable job skills as possible ensures you are a marketable commodity when attempting to woo prospective employers. The same technology that is driving these changes is also making it easier than ever to acquire new work skills. In order to guide you toward a more prosperous and efficient future, lets look at five fun and interesting ways that you can learn new work skills from the privacy of your home. Udemy One of the most popular open-source educational platforms on the web, Udemy has made it easy for anybody to acquire new skills for work and beyond. Whether youre wanting to learn more about interior design or need to learn a new programming language, there is a good chance that youll find classes on Udemy that supply these valuable lessons. The platform offers opportunities for both instructors and students alike, meaning that you can just as easily teach a course through the website as you can learn something new. Because the platform requires minimal overhead and maintenance â€" along with the competitive nature of it â€" youll be able to snag expert training sessions for a mere fraction of the price youd pay in a more traditional setting (many courses on Udemy cost as little as $15). With lifetime access to the platform with any purchase and mobile accessibility, youll literally be able to learn anytime, anywhere. The fun and easy method by which people learn through Udemy makes it one of the most appealing outlets for work skill training. In-House Classrooms Many businesses and brands are proactive in teaching their employees new skill-sets. You may even work for a business where workers are incentivized to pursue additional training with a combination of better pay, select perks and preference in job promotions. Many of these businesses offer online, in-house training sessions via virtual classrooms that help employees learn new skill-sets while theyre on the job. Rather than spending your free time at home pursuing these endeavors, you can instead focus on acquiring more training while at work. Through solutions like   WizIQ, businesses can host on-the-job training sessions that can be used in real time or after the fact via recorded sessions. It is worth asking your human resources department or manager about whether these training opportunities exist. If so, then you may be able to invest in your knowledge base while simultaneously getting paid to learn new tasks thatll make you a stronger job candidate for future opportunities. YouTube The internet has made access to information absolutely paramount in todays society. While people were once willing to pay big bucks for even the most basic training sessions, the flow of information and the competitive nature of the internet has made it easy to learn even more advanced subjects without paying a dime. One of the biggest culprits behind this shift is YouTube. The worlds premier video platform for more than a decade, YouTube offers videos covering just about any topic or event you can imagine. One of the most popular types of videos on the platform is tutorials and how-tos, making it easier than ever for people to acquire new skill sets and learn more about various topics. A simple search along the lines of “how to [topic/skill]” will likely yield dozens, hundreds or even thousands of helpful videos that walk you through the basics: youll even find videos on how to make YouTube videos! For people seeking to acquire new skill-sets that can be used in the workforce, YouTube is one of the most powerful solutions available. Because its free, it is also one of the most popular. Online Internships The most marketable form of work skills is that which involves direct experience with the industry or skill-set. Because of this, an increasing number of people are seeking out opportunities as apprentices or interns with one or more companies via the internet. Internships are usually unpaid opportunities that provide critical experience and on-the-job training, meaning that youll be able to not only get a feel of things in a direct sense, but youll also be able to leverage that into future employment. With more businesses than ever seeking recruits who have prior experience in their specific fields, online internships make it possible for you to get your foot in the door more easily. While online classrooms and video tutorials can help you get a feel for things in a given industry or skill, direct experience is often the most crucial form of job training. Youll have the chance to see if you really want to pursue more training in a particular field, with first-hand experience that can be both fun and interesting. Online College If you want to pursue a new skill-set for either a current or future career, then you may decide to pursue formal education through a college or university. Thankfully, most institutions now offer online instruction and education in lieu of attending a physical campus. While certainly the most expensive option on this list, online college through an accredited university provides just as much of an experience at mastering a new skill as attending physical classes. Youll gain all of the information necessary in order to pursue a new job or promotion, but youll be able to pursue this training on your own time and terms. We now live in a world where we can do, learn and experience virtually anything through the power of the internet. With respect to job and skill training, it is now easier than ever to acquire knowledge and experience for future opportunities. Through these fun and interesting methods, youll never stop loving to learn and will be able to master any skill-set from home, work or on-the-go.

LinkedIn Allows Job Seekers to Leverage Volunteer Experience - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

LinkedIn Allows Job Seekers to Leverage Volunteer Experience - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In a new study recently conducted by LinkedIn, 41% of professionals surveyed stated they consider volunteer work equally as valuable as paid work experience. This comes as great news to the 14 Million plus full-time job seekers. “Given the current economic climate and the hypercompetitive job market, it’s essential to include your volunteer work on your (LinkedIn) profile,” said Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s Connection Direct and author of “Girl on Top.” LinkedIn makes it easy Thanks to a new field titled “Volunteer Experience Causes” on your LinkedIn’s profile, it’s now easier than ever for employers and recruiters alike to see that you are active in the community. This section allows you to include your specific role (e.g. committee chairperson, board member) and the organization type (e.g. humanitarian, domestic, animal causes). With this added to your profile, hiring managers can compare you side by side and possibly decide to hire someone who aligns closer with their company culture or environment. Career relevant volunteering When choosing a volunteer opportunity, it’s a smart idea to find volunteer opportunities that highlight your professional skill set. As an example, if you are a marketing professional and enjoy working with animals, you can source opportunities to work on marketing events or on a marketing community at a local zoo. This highlights your professional skill set, and keeps it fresh, while putting your volunteerism up front at the same time. Finding volunteer opportunities Where do you find these great opportunities? One great site to check out is www.volunteermatch.org which will hook you up with thousands of organizations in need of volunteers by organization type and zip code. Another site you can peruse for options is www.serve.gov, the official site of United We Serve, the nationwide service to meet the growing needs from the economic downturn. I also recommend calling local non-profits in your own neighborhood and asking if they need someone with your skill set to volunteer during the hours you have available. As a former board member on 10+ organizations from global education organizations to the Marketing Committee for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, there’s not a time I remember that we would have turned a volunteer away. Millennial Women Push Progress in the Workplace [INFOGRAPHIC]

Millennial Women Push Progress in the Workplace [INFOGRAPHIC] Are women paid less for the same work? The data says yes. Im not going to argue with it. But I did have to admit to myself at one point in my past that the salary inequality I faced was  actually the result of my notoriously poor negotiation skills. As a result, I approached this infographic with minimal interest, thinking Yeah, yeah, Ive heard all that before. But I was pleasantly surprised by its content, focusing on how millennial women are advancing progress in the areas of equal salaries and growing high profile opportunities for women. Take a look and tell us what you think. Have you been driving these changes? Or seen them occurring in your workplace? Source: HumanResourcesMBA.net

How to Find Great Networking Opportunities in Your City CareerMetis.com

How to Find Great Networking Opportunities in Your City Dennis Waitley said it best when he said “If you’re not networking, you’re not working. Building long-term relationships is one of the most critical parts of success. Whether you want to launch a business or further your career, you’ll need to grow your network and beef up your reputation. Talking to the right people can unlock doors of opportunitythat you’ve never imagined. If you take a look around, you’ll find tons of ways to make connections. However, the key is to focus on quality, not quantity. Keep reading to learn five ways to find great networking opportunities in your city.1) Use social media to your advantageevalevalBecause social media is one of the main ways that event planners market events, it is a great place to start when looking for networking opportunities near you.Facebook is the largest social network on the planet, with over 2 billion users, so it is the recommended “go to” when it comes to making connections. One great thing about FB is that the p latform allows event planners to create pages to advertise any happenings. When looking for networking opportunities in your city using Facebook, just go to the Events section and click on the button that says “discover new events.”At the top of the page, you’ll see what events you’ve been invited to. The section below will show events that are popular with your friends, while the third section focuses on networking opportunities. The simple layout makes it simple to find activities you’re interested in attending without having to do a lot of searching or scouring the internet.Facebook will also keep track of the events you show interest in or attend and recommend others to you by sending out a notification when they come available. For example, an artist who frequents One great thing about this social media networking experience is that others can invite you to their events through ‘e-vites,’ making it easier than ever to get invited to happenings and attend them. The site even provides a space for organizers and attendees to discuss the event beforehand, deepening the connections made. The process of embracing LinkedIn for networking isn’t a difficult one. All you need to do is create a LinkedIn account, update your profile information, add connections, and link up.2) Check out Evenbrite.com and Meetup.comBecause they are two of the most popular networking event sites, most people have heard of both Eventbrite and Meetup. However, they are still worth mentioning since they are one of the best ways to find awesome ways to meet other professionals in your area.evalWith tons of categories to explore, Eventbrite allows networkers to post and search for events. From music and arts to classes and parties, Eventbrite offers much more than networking on a business level. Not only can you search by category, but the website also allows you to find great networking opportunities in your area. Users can zone in on their particular city or look on a whole state level. You can search for events based on dates as well, so if you are looking for networking happenings set for a particular time, Eventbrite allows for that. Both paid and free events are advertised on the site, so there are lots of options if you need a networking event that is affordable. With slogans like “we are what we do” and “the real world is calling,” Meetup connects people to local events in their area. Like with Eventbrite, Meetup’s site is set up in categories. Some of the groupings include:Outdoors and adventureTechFamilyHealth wellnessSports fitnessLearningPhotographyFood drinkWritingLanguage and culturesMusicMovementsLGBTQFilmSci-fi gamesBeliefsArtsBook clubsDancePetsHobbies craftsFashion beautySocialCareer businessAlthough the last category would probably be your ‘go to’ when looking for networking opportunities, you shouldn’t write off the others.A lot of the ways that we network is through hobbies and fun, not just ‘business.’ For e xample, connecting with other photographers could come through a nature walk meetup or an art talk instead of an event with photographers only. Also, while you’re making new connections, Meetup will also help you accomplish some of your personal goals. Have you always wanted to learn to cook? Meetup has culinary events. Maybe you want to learn a new language so that you’ll have more of an edge at work. Meetup can facilitate this too.Remember: networking should be fun. By making connections while doing things that you enjoy, you’ll be more likely to keep these relationships going and build them into something meaningful.3) Volunteer your timeA third way to connect with others in your city is to volunteer your time.evalUnlike networking events, volunteering as a way to help others is a natural process that allows you to bond with other people on a deeper level. Volunteering opportunities provide much more of a relaxed than networking events.Like with hobbies, you’ll be able to connect with people through shared interests and passions instead of just business. You’ll not only be helping an organization but also build contacts in various fields. This is an especially important networking tool if you’re trying to break into a different area.Prime Example:This was the case with Jessica, an HR rep wanting to move into technology. She started volunteering at a local senior’s center where she taught visitors how to use tablets and computers. Because she liked spending time with older people and was tech savvy, the volunteer role was perfect for Jessica and didn’t feel like a chore. Two weeks into her volunteer assignment, a department manager from a local tech company showed up with iPad donations for the center. After chatting with the man for a bit, Jessica learned that the company had several job openings that hadn’t yet been advertised. Jessica submitted her application online and with the manager’s permission, put his name down as a contact. A fe w weeks later, she was hired by the company.evalFinding OpportunitiesThere are tons of ways to find volunteering opportunities. There are online options that you can use:VolunteerMatch.orgCreatethegood.orgIdealist.orgWhat’s even more recommended is thinking about the answers to these three questions: What are you passionate about? What would you spend your time doing if money wasn’t an option? What world or community problem would you solve if you knew you wouldn’t fail? Now take the answers to these questions and find an organization in your community that has a similar mission. Ask them if they need volunteers and if they don’t currently have a volunteer program, consider being the one to start it.4) Start a group of your ownWhich brings us to our fourth way to find networking opportunities in your cityâ€"create your own event. If you’re from an urban area, there might not be a need for the starting of a new group. After all, there will be plenty of events to go to. But if you’re from a more rural place or somewhere that doesn’t have the type of networking organization that you’re looking for, you might consider branching out. This is what Debra Rasberry did when she wanted to take her permanent makeup business, Total Transformations, to the next level. Because she’s from a small city in northern Louisiana, there weren’t very many entrepreneurial groups to connect with. Instead of driving hours to network or giving up,Debra started Axen Club Monroe LA. This goals club provides unique networking opportunities, allowing Debra and her husband, James, to connect to like-minded individuals. It was also part of the boost Debra needed to introduce a therapeutic aspect (NLP) to her business model that wasn’t there before.Final ThoughtsFinding great networking opportunities in your city shouldn’t feel like work. Whether you use social media, networking websites, volunteering opportunities, or launch your own group, the process of making new conta cts and exchanging ideasshould be focused on your and your passions. By embracing networking as an opportunity for growth and making rich connections, you’ll be able to launch your career and your interpersonal relationships further than you ever imagined.

Work Life Fit - How to find yours in 2009!

Work Life Fit - How to find yours in 2009! Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing work life fit expert Cali Williams Yost on my radio show. In case you missed it, tune in to SIRIUS 112 and XM 157 for a replay this Saturday at 6am eastern. Also here are highlights of the tips Cali shared:First, change the way you think about work and life1) Manage your work+life fit day-to-day, not just during big life events. You can no longer afford to have your work and life just happen,. If you dont spend at least some time thinking about and organizing the things you have to do, and the things you want to do, you will get even less done.2) Understand that there is no balance, or right answer for how work should fit into your life. Your fit will not look like anyone elses. The answer is what works for you and your jobit needs to be a win-win.Now that you have the right mindset, here are some action steps to take in 2009:3) Keep a work+life fit calendar with all of your work and personal appointments/goals/responsibilities in one plac e. Ive tried every process and tool to help manage my work+life fit and what I keep coming back to is my calendar to effectively manage the way everything fits into my ever-changing work+life fit as a mother, wife and business-owner.How do you begin? Figure out what type of calendar works for you. I like Outlook for entering to dos electronically. But, because I am more comfortable working off a paper copy, I print it out and carry it around. Enter in as many personal appointments and plans as you can think of for the next six months (a year is even better but could be too overwhelming), from doctors appointments to dates with your partner. Finish by entering work related appointments including quiet time and vacation days. (Tip: for vacation more than a week, block off two days before you depart and two days after you return on your calendar. That will remind you not to over-schedule yourself so that you dont start vacation completely fried, and return immediately overwhelmed.) If there are periods when you business is busier than other times, note that on your calendar. For example, accountants are busier certain times of year than others. Then, start actively managing your work+life fit calendar. When a new work project or personal responsibility appears, go to the calendar and ask yourself: Can I do it given what else is on my plate today, this week, this month? What do I need to shift or let go of in order to manage my work+life fit? Am I leaving time for activities that keep me healthy and functioning at my best (e.g. going to the gym, shopping for healthy food, sleep)?4) Finally, set time asidedaily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annuallyto check in and answer the question, what do I want? Check in and ask yourself what you want your work+life fit to look like and compare it to the work+life fit you see in your calendar and life.Yes, times are challenging, but now more than ever its imperative that you take control of the way work fits into your life . Use these tips to make 2009 the year you start managing your work+life fit in a way that allows you to bring the best of yourself to work and to the rest of your life!More information about managing your work+life fit can be found in Calis book, Work+Life: Finding the Fit Thats Right for You (2005 Riverhead), and in her Work+Life Fit and Fast Company blogs, at worklifefit.com/blogWhats your work life fit strategy for 2009? What approach works for you in finding time for your most important priority?
